Joshua May, stage director

Joshua May, stage director, has directed productions, workshops, and scenes programs across the United States. His productions have incorporated innovative digital projection, interactive audience experiences, and sensory friendly adaptations. His recent directing credits include mainstage and outreach productions of Amahl & the Night Visitors (Menotti), Alcina (Handel), Hansel & Gretel (Humperdinck), Little Red Riding Hood (Barab), Billy Goats Gruff (Davies), Three Little Pigs (Davies), and Captain Lovelock (Duke). He has directed opera productions of Cendrillon (Viardot), Speed Dating Tonight! (Ching), and The Light in the Piazza (Guettel) at Columbus State University. He is a 2019/2020 national finalist for the Charles Nelson Reilly Prize for Stage Directors in both opera and musical theatre from the American Prize. He has upcoming projects as a director in the 2020 Festival Season for Music on Site, Inc. and a new digital projection immersive production experience of Debussy's Pelléas et Mélisande at the Moss Arts Center in Blacksburg, Virginia in 2021.

 

He was a resident artist with Pittsburgh Festival Opera, where he served as an assistant director for their production of The Valkyrie from Johnathan Dove's English adaptation of Wagner's epic Ring Cycle. He was also an associate director for the world premiere of an opera set to the life story and music of Puccini, Scandals. He served as a faculty artist in the opera directing program with the Druid City Opera Workshop at the University of Alabama and as an opera directing fellow at the Hawaii Performing Arts Festival.

 

Dr. May is an Assistant Professor of Voice & Opera Director at the Schwob School of Music at Columbus State University in Columbus, Georgia. Schwob Opera Theatre was selected as a national finalist for the National Opera Association’s Collegiate Opera Scenes Competition. The opera program's 2019 production of Cendrillon was selected as a national semi-finalist for the American Prize. In addition, the 2019 production of Speed Dating Tonight! was selected as a national finalist for the American Prize. Dr. May also created and developed the Schwob Opera Outreach program, which has produced touring performance and educational productions for elementary school students across the community in Columbus, GA.
